Tango Dancing In Argentina Yesterday And Today
It's just not possible to think of Tango dancing in Argentina without envisioning two dazzling and elegant dancers gliding across the dance floor to the sultry sounds of the music. The Tango originated in Buenos Aires in the mid-19th century from the poor and lower classes of European immigrants and those already living in Argentina. It was thought to be too exotic and low class and was frowned upon by the high society of Buenos Aires at that time.
During the early 1900's the Tango reached France, more than likely through Argentine soldiers dancing with local girls. The next decade saw its rapid spread through Europe, especially London and Paris, and with it came changes in fashion and relief from the Victorian era corset!
The European popularity of the Tango eventually made it less unseemly to the higher classes of Buenos Aires. The golden age of Tango dancing in Argentina ran from the mid 1930's to 1955 when the military coup forced the Tango underground. During this Golden Era everyone was
dancing the Tango
and orchestras popped up all over the city of Buenos Aires to accommodate the dance halls, also called "salons" or milongas. The most recognizable
sound of the Tango
is that of the bandoneon, a type of accordian originally developed in Germany which was, and is, very difficult to play.
With the
fall of the military
in 1983, the Tango once again became popular. Because of the years underground many of the original styles of Tango had given way to newer and more intricate steps, which are still in vogue today.
