San Luis

With its low sierras, flat plains, and mountainous vistas, the province of San Luis has something for everyone.  Situated in the Cuyo region of Argentina bordering the eastern Andes and the pampas, this area has less tourism than other provinces in Argentina.  Its unusual microclimates afford visitors the opportunity to enjoy therapeutic health benefits.

The capital city of the same name sits at the foot of the Sierra Grandes Mountains on the Chorrillos River.  With its Meditteranean-influenced colonial architecture and park areas, the city provides a number of historical museums and a craft market.  Visitors can enjoy the Iglesia Cathedral with its ornate carvings and majestic pillars, or stroll on one of the many tree-lined walking paths and serene landscapes in the city's Park of Nations, which is a forestry nursery, and Centenary Park.

Villa de Merlo is a popular destination in the Comechingones Mountain Range in the northeast region of the province with its rich plant life, abundant streams and woodlands.  It is dry and comfortable all year long because of its own microclimate created by the high atmospheric negative ions, which are said to promote good health. The hot thermal springs of Balde and San Jeronimo, both located less than 20 miles from the capital city offer therapeutic health benefits as well for arthritis, rheumatism, obesity and other chronic ailments with water temperatures of 102 to 109 degrees Fahrenheit (39 to 43 Celsius).

An interesting destination is the Sierra de las Quijadas National Park. Translated to  "Jaws Mountain Range",  this 370,600-acre park has many jagged geological formations in varying shades of red and gray, similar to America's Grand Canyon.

The weather in the province is arid with areas of varying microclimates.  Summer temperatures range from 62-74F/17-23C with winter lows of 37F/3C.

San Luis Airport (airport code = LUQ) is 4.5 miles/7km outside of the capital city.  Flights and car rental can be arranged from Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina.  You can also find and compare rates on hotel accommodations and package deals to the province.
