The province of Neuquen in the region of Patagonia is known for its rich natural beauty and dramatic vistas. Bordering Chile along the Andes Mountains in the west, Mendoza to the north, and Rio Negro to the east, the province has abundant forests, lakes, and national parks. The landscape varies from west to east with mountains, fertile valleys and forests, wide steppes and dry plateaus, and fertile riverbed areas. The area is rich in hydrocarbons, natural gas and petroleum, and is known as the "Valley of the Dinosaurs" because of the many fossils uncovered there. Neuquen also has the distinction of being the only province in Argentina spelled the same forward and backward!
The capital city of the same name is located in the east where the Neuquen and Limay Rivers converge, supporting numerous fruit orchards. It is a very windy city because of its proximity at the edge of a plateau. Over the years the city was an important railway stop in Argentina. Trains no longer go through the area, so the original station is now a museum and bus transportation depot. Visitors can stroll down the picturesque Avenida Argentina and view sights along the way such as the National University of Comahue and the Balcony of the Valley, which gives a panoramic view of the city.
An area of interest is the Nahuel Huapi National Park, the largest national park in Argentina, shared by the provinces of Neuquen and Rio Negro. The park is over 2700 square miles/7050 sq.km with numerous lakes, rain forests and mountain peaks rising almost 10,000 feet/3,000 meters. Part of the Argentine Lake District, Nahuel Huapi Lake and its islands is one of the largest lakes in the park. On the shore of Nahuel Huapi Lake is Los Arrayanes National Park, a protected area for arrayan trees, some as old as 300 years. Also in the area is Lanin National Park, famous for its cone-shaped volcano on the border of Chile.
Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts will enjoy the mild temperatures and spectacular views at the popular ski resorts of Chapelco near the village of San Martin de los Andes, a European-style alpine village, and Cerro Bayo near the quaint resort town of Villa La Angostura.
The weather in Neuquen is semi-dry and varies from the Andes to the plateaus, with average summer temperatures of 71 - 88F (21 - 31C) and winter temperatures of 31 - 55F (0 - 13C).
Flights and car rentals can be arranged from Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina via Presidente Peron Airport (airport code=NQN), 5 miles/8km outside of the capital city.
