The province of La Pampa Argentina is located directly in the middle of the country and is one of the least populated regions. One third of the approximately 300,000 residents of
La Pampa Argentina
live in the capital city of Santa Rosa. Cattle ranching and agriculture are the two major means of commerce, and the area is dotted with many estancias. The northeast region bordering Buenos Aires province is part of the humid pampas, where the fertile plains support farming and agriculture. The central region consists of low-lying steppes while the east is semi-arid with intense winds and sandy soil. Visitors to Santa Rosa will enjoy the Provincial Art Museum, the Fitte neighborhood with it's 1930's architecture, the Palace of Justice, as well as the Spanish Theatre and Natural History Museum.
Nature lovers will delight in visiting the Lihue Calel National Park, a 24,500-acre / 9,915-hectare preserve consisting of desert, grasslands and volcanic mountain regions in the middle of the province. The park contains a wide variety of protected flora and fauna, as well as indigenous stone paintings. Camping facilities are available in the park as the nearest town is Puelches, located approximately 18 miles / 20 km from the park, where wool and ostrich leather crafts can be purchased from local artisans.
Watch Highlights of La Pampa Argentina
22 miles / 35 km from Santa Rosa lies the Parque Luro Provincial Reserve, which became the first game preserve in Argentina in the early 1900's. The park contains a European-style chateau, simply called "The Castle" or El Castillo, which was a meeting place for La Pampa Argentina officials. Now a museum, visitors can take a 50-minute tour of the facility and its surroundings, including a courtyard adorned with elegant fountains, statues and plants brought from Europe. Parque Luro is the only natural growth area of the Calden Tree, a flowering member of the pea family with healing medicinal properties.
La Pampa Argentina contains natural salt deposits, one of the largest being La Comarca de la Sal. The region has many salt mines and salt deposits, some colored in red from a small crustacean. The healing properties of salt can be enjoyed at Termas de Bernardo Larroude in northern La Pampa Argentina, a natural salt and potassium spa. The water temperature is a constant 86 F / 30 C degrees and relieves muscle and arthritis pain as well as ailments of the skin. Tourists can enjoy the many pools, hot tubs and saunas, as well as mud baths, massage and seaweed therapy. Camping and sport facilities are available, also. What better way to unwind after a day of sport than in a natural salt spa!
The weather in the province is moderate, more humid in the north and arid in the southwestern portions, with a sharp difference between day and night temperatures. The yearly average is 60.8 F / 16 C, with July and August the driest months. The most rainfall occurs between December and March.
The province is easily accessed via the Santa Rosa Airport (airport code = RSA), on the outskirts of the capital city. Flights can be arranged from Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina. You can also find and compare rates on hotel accommodations and package deals in the province.
