Entre Rios

The province of Entre Rios is located between the Parana and Uruguay rivers, bordering the country of Uruguay and the province of Buenos Aires.  It is aptly named, translating to "between the rivers". Consisting of many marshes, rivers, lagoons, and streams in the northern region and the fertile plains of the pampas in the south of the province, Entre Rios is part of the Mesopotamia region of Argentina. Its multitude of waterways merge to form the Rio de la Plata estuary.

The capital city of Parana lies on the eastern shore of the Parana River, and is connected to Santa Fe city and province by the Raul Uranga - Carlos Sylvestre Begnis Subfluvial Tunnel, a 7864-foot (2397-meter) tunnel that runs beneath the river.  Parana boasts beautiful architecture, along with museums, theaters, art galleries, shops and restaurants for the visitor to enjoy.

An interesting historical destination in the province is the San Jose Palace, approximately 14 miles/23km outside of the city of Concepcion del Uruguay. The construction of the palace began in 1848 and was completed ten years later.  The palace housed the first president of the Argentina Confederation, Justo Jose de Urquiza, who later became governor of Entre Rios.  Now a museum, the San Jose Palace is modeled after 19th-century Italian architecture with stunning archways, corridors and central courtyards.

Nature lovers will enjoy the 21,000-acre El Palmar National Park, located 29 miles/46km north of the city of Colon.  The park is a preserve for Yatay palm trees, an ornamental variety of palms.  With numerous streams and thick vegetation, the park is home to many species of birds, animals and reptiles including giant river otters, mountain cats, chinchillas, painted turtles and skunks.

Of course Entre Rios is also home to the largest celebration of El Carnaval del Pais in Argentina, celebrated two weeks prior to lent each year. Located in the town of Gualeguaychu, a 38,000-seat carnival center, or corsodromo, hosts Samba clubs with over 700 dancers, musicians and singers, all competing for the title of "Kings of the Carnival", vibrantly displayed in costume, song, and dance.

The weather in the province ranges from
69 - 91F/21 - 33C in summer, and
50 - 65F/10 - 18C in winter.  The north is more humid and subtropical, while the south is generally mild and temperate.

The province is easily accessed via the General Justo Jose de Urquiza Airport  (airport code=PRA),  located  4.5 miles/7.5km  outside of Parana.  Other airports in the province include the Comodoro J.J. Pierrestegui Airport in Concordia (COC) and Gualeguaychu Airport (GHU) in Gualeguaychu.  Flights can be arranged from Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina.  You can also find and compare rates on hotel accommodations and package deals in the province.
