Catamarca Argentina is famous for its puna, or high Andean plateau, enticing visitors to this Andean Northwest region which is superb for hiking, trekking and horseback riding.

The capital city of San Fernando del Valle houses Las Huellas del Inca Archeological Park where prehistoric drawings can be viewed. Local crafts stemming from the rich history and artistic abilities of the people are displayed in the famous Craftsman Market.

Mining is a large industry in this mountainous province. Belen is Argentina's most important area for the mining of gold, silver and copper. Rodocrosita, or "Rose of the Inca" is mined from the Capillitas Site in Andalgala. This lovely pink stone is the national gem of Argentina.

An area of interest is the Antofagasta de la Sierra, a volcanic field with large expanses of salt marsh, deserts and volcanoes. Also worth noting is the native architecture of Laguna Blanca, a town that breeds llamas and pink flamingos.

The capital is easily accessible by the Felipe Varela Airport (airport code "CTC"), just a few miles from the city. Flights and car rental can be arranged from Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina.
